Which instrument should I learn?

Choosing an instrument is tricky – which instrument will keep you excited? Which instrument suits your personality? Which instrument fits you socially?

Mashrek Academy’s head of music Hind Sabanegh is an expert at matching students to instruments and she is there to encourage and support students as they grow their love of music.

Learn the Violin

The violin isn’t the easiest instrument to learn at first, but with the right teacher a student will see results within 6 months.

The violin is a great choice. It sounds beautiful on it’s own and it will take a leading role in everything from small ensembles to a full symphony orchestra.

Learn the Drums

More than almost any other instrument, drums and percussion teaches coordination. It’s a great choice for people who enjoy physicality in their music. Learning to play drums can lead to an array of choices – from playing in an orchestra, to jazz and rock music. Aside from the standard drum kit, there’s an huge choice of percussion to learn, including tuned percussion and smaller hand held instruments.

Learn the Trumpet

Brass instruments are versatile both in the types of ensembles you can play in as well as the genres of music you can enjoy learning. The trumpet is an exciting, loud instrument which can also be mournful and delicate. A great solo instrument which can lead to opportunities in orchestras, jazz and pop.

Learn to sing

Definitely the most portable instrument! The range of genres you can work towards is endless. Singing is a great social instrument and can lead to joining a choir, a band or even singing in a musical production. Just about everyone can sing – with the right tuition you will learn to master your ear to understand pitch and harmony.

Understanding the benefits a musical education offers our students is at the very heart of why, as we approach 30 years of excellence, the Mashrek International School has launched the Mashrek Academy of Music.
